Earthquake
じゃあ、
Hey, I'm not going to
ask how you are doing
today, because I'm sure
that you are worried about
friends and family in Japan!
My thoughts and prayers go
out to all those who are
suffering through this.
This post will help those,
who may need to, talk
about these topics in English.
I will add links to important
ways to help at the bottom of
the blog!
I hope everything will be ok!
My best friend lives in Fukushima!!
Quake
Often times we shorten
the word Earthquake to quake!
Quake can also be used
as a verb.
The meaning is
"to shake."
Because of this,
earthquake means
that the Earth itself is shaking.
Aftershocks are the small
Earthquakes that come after!!!
Epicenter
This is the center of the
Earthquake.
It describes the point
on top of the ground
above where the center was!
"Was the epicenter in Sendai?"
"Was the epicenter out in
the ocean?"
"Where was the epicenter?"
Magnitude
This is the strength of an Earthquake.
Usually, they are recorded from 2.0
to 10.0.
We say "two point O," not
two point zero.
There has never been
a "Ten point O" earthquake.
The Sendai Earthquake was
recorded at 8.9!
We will add the word "on" to
talk about the scale:
"The Sendai Earthquake was 8.9
on the Richter Scale!"
The JMA Scale
This scale, as you know, goes
from 0 to 7.
It is measured in units of shindo (震度)
or seismic intensity.
This means the "degree of shaking."
Unlike the Richter magnitude scale
(which measures the total magnitude
of the earthquake, and represents the
size of the earthquake with a single
number) the JMA scale describes the
degree of shaking at a
point on the Earth's surface.
As a result, the measure of
the earthquake varies from place to place,
and a given quake may be described as
"shindo 4 in Tokyo, shindo 3 in Yokohama,
shindo 2 in Shizuoka".
Debris
This is a word to describe
all the remains that are
usually scattered on the ground
after a disaster!
"There is a lot of debris
where the building fell."
"It will take a long time
to clean up the debris."
The pronunciation will sound
like デブリ.
Clean up
As you know is a
phrasal verb, but
it can also be used
as a noun!!!
"How long will the
clean up take?"
"The clean up will
be quite difficult."
Experience
This is a favorite word
for Japanese People
because it is a direct
translation of Japanese.
You can ask, "have you
ever experienced
an Earthquake?"
Americans will usually
ask it like this:
"Have you ever been in
an Earthquake?"
"Do you know anyone
who was in the Kobe Quake?"
Fault
This is the crack in
the Earth that creates
a lot of quakes!
Where two plates
under the crust of the
Earth meet, this is
called a fault or a
fault line!!!
"There is a famous
fault in California."

プレートテクトニクス
Plate tectonics
This is the theory
of plates under the Earth.
These plates are part
of the mantle.
This is one of the 3
major parts of the Earth.
Crust
Mantle
Core
Plate tectonics is the
theory that they move
and rub against each other.
The reactor is the most
worrisome problem at
the moment, seems like.
