Jimmy Mirikitani
& Japanese Americans
じゃあ、
Hey, how is everything going?
I had quite an interesting day!!!
I was teaching at Zaiya when
an older man escorted by a lady
sat next to me.
His name was Jimmy Mirikitani
and I was very lucky
to sit next to him!!
Jimmy Mirikitani
ジミー・ミリキタニ
Jimmy is a Japanese Man
that was born in America,
grew up in Hiroshima and
has survived through
his art.
He became homeless
in the late 1980s. For
over ten years he lived
on the streets. He continued
to do his art with chalk.
He loves cats and includes
them in most of his work!!!
He was discovered on
the street and after
911, he became world famous.
Jimmy was sent to
an internment camp
during World War II.

Internment Camps
強制収容所
A lot of Americans
as well as Japanese
don't know much
about these camps.
Some do not know
at all!!!
In 1942, Japanese Americans
were taken from their
homes and forced
to live in prison camps.
The conditions were horrible!
In 1988, the United States
Government finally apologized.

The 442nd
This was a Regiment
in the army that was
composed of Asian Americans.
Most of them were Japanese!
A regiment is a military unit!
They were the most
highly decorated US military
unit of its size and duration.
The 442nd was known
for saving the 141st
(or the "lost battalion")
from the Germans!!!
Their motto was "go for broke."
This means just do it
and don't worry about
the risks!!!
*duration: 存続期間

George Masa
ジョージ・マサ
George was a mysterious
man that loved photography!!!
He also fell
in love with
the Smokey Mountains!
グレート・スモーキー・マウンテン
This is a part of the
Appalachian Mountain Chain!!!
アパラチア山脈
There are two major
mountain ranges in America,
The Rockies and
The Appalachians!
In the past, before
The Smokey Mountains
were a national park, logging
companies were destroying it!
George lived and hiked
through the Smokey Mountains
religiously!
To do something
"religiously"
means to do it
consistently and with
extreme passion!!
George's Photography and
love for the Smoky
Mountains helped to create
the national park!
His photos were used
to influence the government
to start the park and
protect the beauty
of the area!!!

Second-generation American
This describes people
who are born in
America, but their
parents came
from another land!!!
"He is a
second-generation
American."
"Do you know any
second-generation Americans?"
Today I met a
second-generation Japanese
American at Kinokuniya.
She helped me with a book.
It is always interesting
to talk with them about
their experience!!!
Over 90% of Japanese
immigrants to the USA
settled in California
before World War II.
