Linking and Shrinking
In Japanese, most sounds
are pronounced individually!
In English we tend to speed
through many unimportant
words!!
What does link mean???
This means to connect!
It is a noun and a verb!!
Shrink means to make smaller!
The opposite is expand!!
Say these two words back to back:
Expend and expand
The meanings are totally different
so it's very important to
pronounce them correctly!!!
"end" and "and" sound
very different!
"end" >> "bend"
"and" >> "band"
Linking and shrinking is
the number one reason
people have a hard time
hearing English!!!
*pronunciation (名): 発音
pronounce (動): 発音する
link: つながる
shrink: 縮まる
expand: 拡張する
expend: 費やす
Rules:
"ing" words are usually spoken without the "g."
"I am going to the movies!" This will be:
"I'm goin to the movies."
We drop the "g" sound!

"nd" words are usually spoken
without the "d" sound!
"and" sounds like "n"
M&M's are spoken like this:
"eminems"
"going to" >>> "gonna"
(「ゴナ」)
"I'm gonna go to the movies."
"nd" words are usually spoken
without the "d" sound!
"and" sounds like "n"
M&M's are spoken like this:
"eminems"
(「エミネムズ」)
In fact, the rapper's name
eminem sounds the same!!!
Linking
A word ending in a consonant
that is followed by an open vowel
will link!!!
"get a" will sound like "getta"
"thinking about" will be
"thinkinabout"
"take a break" will also sound like
one word: "takabreak."
Even though this word ends
with an "e," the "e" is silent, so
these words link!!!
Look at a sentence like this!!!
This kind of sentence can
be a nightmare for Japanese
and Korean Speakers:
"I've been thinking about taking
a break and going on a long
vacation to get away from the city!!!"
So many words will
link and shrink
in this sentence!
Linking and shrinking allows
us to speak quickly and get to
the important information!
*consonant: 子音
vowel: 母音
nightmare: 悪夢
英語でこれなんていう???
社交的
Outgoing
Someone who really likes
people and generally likes
to meet new people is called
outgoing!
"Are you outgoing?"
"She is so outgoing!"
"Kim seems outgoing, but
she is actually very shy."
Did you know that
hips in Japan are in a
different location on the body
than in America???
