Culture ~The key to having fun!~
Vanity & Narcissism

じゃあ、
How is everything??
Notice that I say this most days!
Most American people greet each other
this way day in and day out!!
Vanity
Vanity is a noun.
Vain is an adjective!!
Are you vain?

This means to
care more about
yourself and the
way you look
than you do about
other people.
Are any of your friends vain??
We all know someone who is vain right?
If we stop for a second we will probably
notice that we are a little vain ourselves!
Vanity was the name of an actress in the 80's!
She was in "The Last Dragon."
Carly Simon did a song called "You're so Vain (うつろな愛)."
"You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you."
Carly Simon (カーリー・サイモン) 1972
*vain: 虚栄心の強い、うぬぼれの強い
vanity: 虚栄心、うぬぼれ
Arrogance is too much confidence and is a
little different than vanity.
Confidence (自信) is a good thing right?? Sure.
There is a famous phrase:
Too much of a good thing is bad!!!
過ぎたるは及ばざるがごとし
I love chai tea, but too much makes me feel bad!!
I love to run, but I can't run all day!
Balance seems to be the key in all things!
Another word for arrogant is cocky!!!
Arrogant sounds like elegant for
most Japanese People!!
Narcissism

Are you narcissistic?
Some people say that being
a little narcissistic is good.
Narcissism is a noun.
Narcissistic is an adjective.
Narcissism is loving yourself
too much!!!
How is it different from vanity???

Vanity is usually only used for your appearance!
Narcissism is usually loving
everything about
yourself.
Narcissism comes from mythology!!!
Narcissus was a man who was too proud, so
the gods punished him. They made him fall
in love with himself.
He saw a reflection of himself in a pool of water.
He loved it so much that he couldn't leave and
he wasted away. (Died from starvation)
*mythology: 神話
reflection (名): 反射 reflect(動): ~の像を映す, 反射する
punish (動): 罰する
starvation (名): 餓死 (がし)
starve (動): 飢えに苦しむ、おなかがぺこぺこだ ("I'm starving!")
We all have an ego!!
Our ego is our drive to do
things for ourselves.

We want success.
We want happiness.
We want a nice apartment.
If we have too much ego
we become egocentric!!
Centric is a suffix that we add to
the end of words.
It is also an adjective.
It means that whatever word
we put with it is the center.
Heliocentric - The sun is the center
Helio = Sun
Egocentric - Your ego is the center.
Nuance
These words all seem similar in ways.
The nuance however is different.
Nuance is a subtle or slight degree of difference,
as in meaning, feeling, or tone!!!
This is something we will deal with more
in the future!!
英語でこれなんていう???
マゾ サド
Masochistic "Mazo"

This means that you enjoy
pain or being controlled.
For most Americans pain is
connected to these words.
It seems control is the bigger
focus of these words in Japan.
Sadistic "Sado"

This means that you enjoy
causing pain or
controlling people!!!
"My boss is so sadistic."
"American humor can be sadistic."
"She can be so masochistic."
These words are adjectives!
A person is a sadist!! (名)
A person is a masochist!! (名)

A friend of mine said that they are an "N."
They explained that they are not マゾ or サド.
They are nuetral!!!
