A "big no-no" is something that is really impolite or something
that is really against the rules!

There are a lot of big no-nos in Japan!

037.gifMaybe, one day, you will have to explain one to an American.

Don't leave the chopsticks stuck in your food!

Big NO-NO (ご法度) & ロリコン_f0212156_9344792.jpg
This is a big no-no in Japan.

You can explain that this is used in
funeral rites!

Funeral rites are customs that are attached to funerals.

Don't pass food with your chopsticks to another
person's chopsticks!!!
This is also a funeral rite!

My friend is in the hospital and I want to
bring her flowers!056.gif

Please tell Americans that it is better not to bring
a potted plant!
*potted: 鉢植え

034.gifA potted plant is a plant in a pot. It has roots and will grow a
long time. The person will feel like they are going to be in the
hospital forever.

Maybe you could make another recommendation!!!

Throwing your cigarette butts on the ground is
a big no-no!

Some people in Japan carry a portable ashtray!!

Note: I don't think American people will ever adopt
this habit.

034.gifThe butt of a cigarette is the end part that you
don't smoke.

Don't drink first, my friend!!!

Big NO-NO (ご法度) & ロリコン_f0212156_9391324.jpg
You might not want to eat first either!!

It is common in Japan to wait for everone to toast before
sampling your beverage.

Japanese people tend to leave a little food on their plates as well.
This is not a bad habit to adopt either. There always seems to
be one peice of shumai or gyoza left that they don't eat.
Maybe the other person wants it???

Next week we will do big no-nos in America, but here is
one for starters:

Big NO-NO (ご法度) & ロリコン_f0212156_94049.jpg
Don't slurp noodles if you are in
an American restaurant!

If there are a lot of Japanese people there than it will
be totally ok, but this sound is not good in the U.S.

034.gifSlurping is the sound you make when you are sucking
the ramen into your mouth.

I have tried many times to slurp my ramen, but I still
imagine that my mother is standing over me looking
very dissapointed!

Lolita Complex

A person always has a complex in English.

"He has a big lolita complex."

"Do you have a lolita complex?"

"He used to have a lolita complex, but
now he has a oedipus complex."

Lolita was the title of a book whose main
character was named lolita. A man in the story
fell in love with her even though she was way
too young. Lolita Complex

I love to learn about other cultural taboos, so if you
know some, please send them in!!!
